Abstract:As the information technology has become the main technical force to change the daily life and behavior of urban residents, studies focusing on people's activities and travel behavior impacted by information technology have important significance for understanding the trend of urban space and traffic patterns. In order to contribute an empirical study to the literature on leisure activities and transportation impacts of information technology, the structural equations model (SEM) is employed to analyze the impacts of information technology usage on leisure activities and travel behavior. Questionnaire data were collected from the survey conducted in the city proper of Nanjing in 2011 summer, which successfully interviewed 1004 residents. In the SEM model, five exogenous which mainly are socio-economic attributes, and five endogenous variables, concluding the leve of information, online leisure activities, residence property, ability to accept new things, and travel behavior, are specified,in order to explore the relationships among socio-economic attributes, informatization, online leisure, and travel behavior variables. The online leisure is defined as the experience of web surfing, social networking, video viewing, online game, online shopping, etc. The results indicate that the information technology has had a broad impact on leisure activities of urban residents in Nanjing. The residents active in online leisure usually spent shorter travel time everyday, which shows that online leisure does have impacts of substitution or complementarity, but this is differ from some research results which indicates the information technology will conduce more outdoor leisure. Besides, the socio-economic attributes of residents are fundamental factors which influence the leisure activities and travel choice. Generally speaking, age and education are major factors influencing online leisure activities, while education and income are key factors influencing transport option.
